My last entry was at the end of a long and trying trip. I feel my frustration came through on the chronicle of the day's events. However, that is behind us now, we should go forward. It does not matter what happens in the day's events, you must still eat. After arriving in Innsbruck we decided to go to the historic Old Town in Innsbruck for dinner. If you have ever been to Innsbruck or are a student of European history, I am sure you knew of the Hapsburg dynasty. Emperor Maximilian (1459-1519) is forever linked to Innsbruck. He is considered the founder of the Hapsburg Empire and, he made Innsbruck his capital city. Many of the structures here today are reminiscent of that period. The most famous is the Golden Roof. Innsbruck's most famous landmark shines brightly in Old Town. This alcove balcony, built by Maximilian over 500 years ago, gets its name from the 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles that adorn the roof. The Emperor enjoyed this view very much He looked down at the hustle and bustle of his city from this location. He could look down and see the restaurant we chose to eat in for our first night in Innsbruck. The Weinhaus Happ, long a historic landmark in the old town, was first built in 1484... a great restaurant and a nice way to end your first day in Austria. With a little (maybe a lot) of imagination, you could almost see Maximilian looking down on you. What would he think of things today?
After a good night's sleep, we were refreshed and restored. Our wives had thoughtfully packed a change of clothing for us to use, just in case the unthinkable happened... no luggage.
It was a beautiful day and we decided we should go visit the Zugspitz, the highest mountain in Germany. We took a train from Innsbruck to the base of the Zugspitz and then an aerial tram to the top on the Austrian side. Later we rode a cog train down on the German side. Afterwards we boarded our train for the return to Innsbruck. When we got on the train, we received a phone call from our hotel. Our lost luggage had been found. The airline delivered it to the hotel, and we were very happy. A pretty train ride through the Alps, great scenery, and our clothing has been returned.... a great day.

Thanks for the memories. It’s been a long time since I was there while in the army.
